The cycle of hate — What Attack of Titan taught me
Across the ocean, inside the walls..They are the same.
I am actually at a loss of words to say eventhough I have a lot to say. Attack of Titan is close to my heart. While in the beginning I was only in for the glory and thrills of fighting back the titans. But a close rewatch and study of later chapters shows how much the story tells us the cycle of hate people breed. Different religion, different colors and different ideals — We constantly fight to show our “supposed” superiority. We feel threatened whenever anyone doesn’t follow our set of rules. One side wins until the other side gains upper hand and then the zero sum game continues crushing all lives and hopes of people caught in the crossroads. Ends don’t justify the means when the means are just causing harm to others , physically or mentally. We cannot abandon the golden rules of justice and empathy when it suits us. The greatest of our faults — brainwashing our children with our hatred when we are supposed to tell me that dharma(morality) is a two edged sword that you have to walk all through your life. While not everything is black and white , things that are grey are still not white. We are all humans and humanity is one one language that transcends time and generations. Color, Beliefs don’t and shouldn’t divide us. We have to rise up to injustice countering only with justice. The acts of few cannot justify hate and attack on the rest. Freedom is what everyone is born with and that cannot be taken away. “Freedom” — the word that invokes joy even when writing. The freedom of expression, freedom of all things that make us human . To love , to work and to learn and to do all sorts to make our lives worthwhile. There is not side or short rules of freedom. You cannot have a degreed set of freedom . Freedom is complete on its own.
From the show , you may like Eren but he did cross the line by large margin and he needs to be stopped. We shouldn’t follow our heroes but only what our humanity has taught over the generations. We can only break the cycle by showing mercy , forgiveness to all we meet. While you might not be the ones to reap the benefits of your act but future generations will be forever grateful to you. Even if you will be forgotten in few generations, you act of kindness will be known throughout the end of time.
